A brief update. First, the relevant website which has a lot of interesting material is http://freedv.org/tiki-index.php

Vincent and I have conducted a number of tests using a couple of FT-290 Rii and laptop computers. Initially it was over a distance of about 2 Km, but then using the same power (1.75w) we managed a good contact over 24Km. This was on 144.975 lsb

Tonight there was loose European qso at 1900 UT but despite being on time and using the http://qso.k7ve.org to see who was doing what on which frequencies, we heard nothing at all. We can now easily connect to the Yaesu at the club using either a hardware decoder (SM1000) or a laptop and plan to attempt a short link on VHF, this time using a couple of the SM1000s
